Chapter 5
When they arrived in London, Elizabeth could not stop staring at the grand mansion before her.
âYour house, Darcy, itâsâitâs beautiful,â she said. âSo grand and stately.â
âOur house,â he gently corrected her.
It was late in the day, and Elizabeth was exhaustedâfrom her wedding, from the travel, and fromâ¦everything that her husband had shown to her and done to her on the carriage ride.
After making her âcome,â as he called it, he had righted her skirts and brought out wine from a basket. Theyâd eaten small slices of cake and berries, and heâd kissed a bit of cream from her cheek.
But he had done nothing else remotely intimate with her. She wonderedâwas he done for the day? And was it shameful or immoral that she hopedâ¦not?
She sighed and tried to right her mind as Darcy introduced her to the household staff. She met the steward and the head housekeeper, as well as the maids and the woman who would serve as her own personal maid, Helena.
âWe have dinner prepared, Sir, and can set up the dining room whenever you like,â Mrs. Hunt, the housekeeper, said. It was obvious that the entire staff loved their Master, and they eagerly regarded Elizabeth.
She smiled and hoped she could do her new last name justice. It would be a change, to be in charge of not one, but two great houses. And even to have her own personal ladyâs maid! She and her sisters had always shared whichever maid could be spared to do all the girlsâ hair.
âThat is not necessary, Mrs. Hunt,â Darcy replied.
Elizabeth looked up at him in surprise.
âWe are exhausted. Please fix us a tray. We shall dine in our chambers tonight. Actuallyâwhile weâre eating, have the maids prepare a hot bath upstairs, as well.â
He did not have to say "we shall retire early tonight" out loud, but judging from at least one smirking errand boy, the household staff must all know very well what their Mr. Darcy had in mind for the evening.
Elizabeth tried valiantly not to blush, though from the sudden heat in her cheeks, she was sure she failed.
If only she was as certain as even the most humble servant, as to what was about to happen to her!
